Apple's efforts to produce self-driving cars have failed to pick up steam owing to a lack of team coordination and the blurring of leadership goals, even as rival companies steadily enter the autonomous car market.

Google has ramped up their self-driving project by acquiring an additional 500 Windsor-made Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans. The US tech giants are offering rides to the general public as it continues to carry out initial tests of the technology in the minivans.

Google has yet again reiterated its desire to develop a new way of mobility following the announcement that it will rebrand its self-driving car unit. Management at Google have made a series of decisions in the last number of months which illustrate clearly its desire to ramp up operations in relation to autonomous driving technology.

Google's self-driving firm Waymo has announced that it is expanding its operations by adding 62,000 Fiat Chrysler minivans to its autonomous fleet in a collaboration agreement jointly announced by the two companies.
