The Barcelona City Council and Huawei Spain have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to drive innovation and advance smart city initiatives.

Announced at MWC Barcelona 2025, the partnership aims to transform Barcelona’s urban development areas, focusing on the city command center, smart buildings, connectivity, green energy, and ICT talent development to accelerate digital transformation.

Barcelona’s Mayor, Jaume Collboni highlighted, “This collaboration, which reinforces Barcelona’s position as a technological capital, is an important step to promote digital inclusion and guarantee equitable access to technology.”

Driving Digital Transformation Across Barcelona

Recognizing the importance of supporting ICT talents, the collaboration will establish the Huawei Spain Academy —the first of its kind in Europe—to enhance digital skills across the region.

This initiative will integrate with Barcelona’s Activa’s IT Academy, leveraging its expertise in programming and big data training.

Leo Chen, Corporate Senior Vice President and President of Enterprise Sales at Huawei, emphasized, “This agreement reflects our strong commitment to innovation and the digital transformation of cities. Barcelona is a global benchmark in technology and sustainability, and at Huawei, we are proud to collaborate in initiatives that will contribute to the development of a more efficient, sustainable, and inclusive digital ecosystem.”

Huawei plans to empower Barcelona’s digital transformation by leveraging its advanced technological capabilities in cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and smart city developments. Through this collaboration, Huawei aims to position Barcelona as Europe’s benchmark for smart city initiatives.
