New Orleans has been granted a USD 9.3 million federal grant from the Federal Highway Administration’s Charging and Fueling Infrastructure program, significantly boosting the city’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.
Announced by the city’s Office of Resilience and Sustainability, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act funding will finance the installation of approximately 58 new public EV chargers across the city.
Sixty-six percent of these new chargers will be strategically placed in disadvantaged communities identified by the Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool.
While exact locations are yet to be finalized, the city confirmed that these new infrastructures will include Level 2 and DC Fast Chargers, distributed across the city based on feedback from a community survey conducted in 2021.
Advancing Sustainability Efforts
This strategic initiative builds upon the existing Electric Vehicle Charger Program, a partnership between the city and Entergy New Orleans, which has already installed 30 chargers at 25 locations, primarily at New Orleans’ libraries and parks.
Mayor LaToya Cantrell noted, “This USD 9.3 million federal award represents a transformative investment in our communities, especially those that have been historically underserved.”
Cantrell noted the importance of prioritizing equity and access to ensure clean and sustainable transportation in the city.
The expansion aligns with New Orleans’ Climate Action Plan, which focuses on achieving 40% passenger and light-duty EVs by 2035. The initiative extends beyond the city, with plans to install chargers in Dillard and Xavier University campuses.
Congressman Troy A. Carter stated, “These new EV chargers, strategically placed in every district with a focus on underserved communities, represent a bold step forward in ensuring equitable access to clean transportation.”
Carter emphasized the significance of partnerships in driving innovation and empowering communities. “This funding highlights the importance of sustainability, resilience, and economic opportunity for all New Orleans residents. Together, we are advancing toward a cleaner, greener future.”
